Institute of Digital Fashion: Origins

IoDF are creating the new vocabulary for fashion’s metaverse futures, by working closely with globally recognised talent, brands, and institutions in a multifaceted approach to building digital solutions for real world problems.

Holding 6 Industry firsts, IoDF are noted as global leaders in digital fabrication, IRL x URL experiences, clothing, avatar, environments, diverse digital representation and immersive VR, AR, and WebXR. Born to push tech-use toward a more democratic and sustainable future, IoDF offers a platform and manifesto to restructure how technology and digital are used from creation to consumer.

Based in London, United Kingdom delivering glo-cal projects with an extended team across the globe.

IoDF was co-founded in 2020 by Creative Director Cat Taylor, also known as Cattytay, previously founder of Digi-gxl and Leanne Elliott Young, also known as Metaverse Mama, CEO and previously the founder of CommuneEast. The two visionaries are both noted as iconic figures in the global web3 and the British fashion scene, they ceremoniously met at a conference discussing the future of digital fashion, during a London Fashion Week event headed by Dazed back in 2019.

‍According to its founders, IoDF was created as ‘an emblem for change’ building a platform to fix and re-frame a broken system that faces a series of important issues, such as:

  • The lack of diversity and innovation in the fashion sector.
  • Patriarchy - the Web3 space is currently dominated by cis white men.
  • Inefficiency and failure to provide the means for sustainable development.
  • The hermetic nature of the fashion environment makes it difficult for young designers to succeed.
  • Inaccessibility of fashion weeks and other related events for the average consumer.

So, how does IoDF plan to go about doing this? Through their philanthropic work and their 6 world's firsts, all of which are built from the core pillars above in which they structure their whole company upon.

IoDF’s 6 World Firsts showcase industry innovations putting community and knowledge exchange at the forefront:

  1. IoDF x Machine-A: “World’s first shoppable AR for multi brand retail”

IoDF’s collaboration with Machine-A brought the world’s first shoppable AR experience during London Fashion Week. Users were given exclusive access to discover the designers’ latest collections through a showcase of the fashion designers'  future-thinking messages and visuals in an innovative way.

IoDF gifted their services to celebrate the craftsmanship of 11 designers, including Martine Rose, Richard Quinn and A-COLD-WALL*, pushing enhanced software capabilities. IoDF built an immersive retail experience that exceeded the technical parameters of AR housed within Instagram.

“IoDF has created a future where the digital incubates the physical, where the two worlds can whirl around and compliment each other.” - Dazed

IoDF x August Getty Atelier: “World’s first modelled digital showcase, at Paris Haute Couture.”

In 2021, the World’s First couture garment created by a digital atelier was made by IoDF, for August Getty Atelier. The IoDF digital atelier team of globally renowned 3D artists produced these digital garments by creating each ornate detail singular in URL. Featuring over 1000 hours of craftsmanship, the garments are an exceptional feat of 3D design, each single stitch and thread is precise and determined by couture standards.

  1. IoDF x ROKSANDA: “World’s first AR wearable NFT sold in £ not crypto for London Fashion Week.

IoDF’s collaboration with ROKSANDA in 2022 for London Fashion Week brought the first NFT available to purchase through a brands website in £ not crypto. This moment acted as a key educational piece, supporting a new community of luxury fashion and bringing them into the web3 space, merging the two worlds.

The NFT collection of luxury wearables created by IoDF for the popular London-based fashion label Roksanda owned by the famous Serbian designer Roksanda Ilincic, was shown at the London Fashion Week 2022 event launched at the Tate Britain.

Closing Thoughts

In summary, Institute of Digital Fashion is revolutionising the fashion space, provoking fundamental change in the traditional fashion industry to go digital - and the metaverse, web3, and NFTs are a great avenue for that.

Once again, we can't wait for IoDF to exhibit new ideas at the NFT Paris event. Till then, coolkidz!
